Friday Tonic - The Corn Woman

Today, I stopped by at a popular spot in Lagos to buy roasted corn. My gospel music was playing as usual, that's a way of life for me now. The old lady who sold corn to me just started dancing to the song that was playing. She was so happy and her happiness was so infectious that I didn't realise I had started dancing in the car as well. When I left her, I replayed and replayed that particular song and danced until I got to my destination. I knew that people were staring at me because there was a bit of traffic but I couldn't be bothered. I was in a place of praise and totally enjoying it. God wasn't done with me yet, my sister that I went to visit added more joy to my already improved happy state of mind. She just said, "Amy, come, I'll take you to a Calabar kitchen so we can eat nsala soup" That was like music to my ears. I needed that so badly, the food was so good and my sister was in the spirit, she went all the way out to give me a nice time even though she didn’t know of my state of mind earlier on.

Sometimes, this may be God's way of telling us that He's thinking of us.

Being in that praise realm did a lot for me. I was thinking of a million things that still needed to be sorted out and was getting worried. I was playing my music which usually cheered me up but I'm still human and there will always be low moments occasionally. I was going through one until I met the corn woman.

She was selling corn by the roadside, obviously not well educated or even not educated at all. It wasn't my first time of buying corn from her; sometimes her grown kids would come to sell with her. Her face was wrinkled possibly from several hardships; I could tell she wasn’t that old. Her clothes were worn out, she had no make-up on, yet, there she was, praising God very happily.  I was so glad to have encountered her. She inspired me and took me from a place of worry to a place of praise. Though I did not solve a physical problem today, I solved a mental one. I had peace. I stopped thinking about problems and started thinking of the so many reasons to thank God.

Life, good health, my spouse, my children, my father, sisters and brothers, good friends, a comfortable bed to sleep on, petrol in my car, car air-conditioner working, my eye brows well done(and I did them myself), I was dressed really nicely though casual. Even if I say so myself, I am intelligent, eloquent, and wise to an extent, beautifully and wonderfully made. Chai!  Above all, I am a believer. I have Christ Jesus.

I'm encouraging someone today, you may be in a bad place; no money, no spouse, no job, bad marriage, sick parents/child (ren), rent issues, relationship wahala, men keep leaving you, the ladies you like keep leaving you, etc.

My advice tonight is that you get yourself to place of praise. Thank God for every single thing even for something as gross as farting.
Ask those who have had surgeries and they will tell you how luxurious it is to fart. It's an indication that your surgery went well. (Doctors no be so?)  I've even heard stories of how farting became a prayer point. "I command you to fart..."

On a more serious note, quit worrying and start praising. Don't ask God for anything, just keep praising and believing. Praise Him like it has already happened. I challenge you to dedicate at least thirty minutes tonight and just praise God!

The feeling is priceless! And I'm grateful God spoke to me through the corn woman.

  1. You are absolutely right, Praise is a powerful tool that we have but don't recognize. It opens the door for so many untapped potential and freedom that we think only prayer and fasting can do. Remember Paul and Silas in prison? that was the weapon they used that enabled God to fight on their behalf. So "put a praise on it " today like Tasha Cobbs sang, it's a great medicine to our overall being.

  2. We often speak of “praising God,” even the Bible commands all living creatures to praise the Lord (Psalm 150:6) it is a huge relief what praises can do in our life. As a person a little pat on the back gives a lot of encouragement, and a comforting hope. Image how a God feels when we praise him. I think that is the only thing God requires of us.

No matter where we find ourselves in good time and bad time. Praise him for his acts of power; praise him for his surpassing greatness.”
Every means we have to make sound is to be used to praise the Lord!

In that manner, we need to be less judgemental and praise more and more. The world will be a better place If we praise more. There is every reason to praise even in bitter lessons, praise God for teaching you that horrible lesson it can only make you wiser. Instead of being moody, praise him for that had condition, he is the only one that make every burden lighter.

  8. I work in this hospital and when you see the level of problems that people have, you will just start praising and stop the complaints. A grateful heart is what God requires of us.
