MAR

From the bottom of my heart, I gave out some recharge cards as my own little way of saying thanks to my readers for going with me on my new blog journey. It was just a trial giveaway to know how the response would be and I asked for a simple acknowledgment. Sadly only two people acknowledged even though all six cards have been used. It may be small but it was done out of love and excitement. However, I’m not deterred, I’ll do it over and over again and it will even get bigger.

So today, I met a very beautifully spirited young lady, she was just so good natured and we got talking like we had always been friends. I have been out of Lagos for a couple of days and when I realised that she was also a Lagos chic, I asked what she had come to do in the city where we were both in.

Her response shocked me because I had never seen anyone that blunt before. “I am here to carry out an IVF” “What?!” I asked, shocked at her openness and then she talked even more. Her alarm went off while we spoke and she told me that it was time for to give herself an injection and then take her drugs. From the much that she confirmed to me, to go through an IVF, the patient has to learn to inject herself at certain times; a scan is also conducted almost every day when it is close to the fertilisation day and this scan is done by passing a long tube through the vagina. (Very unpalatable)

I asked her if it was painful and she said that it was just uncomfortable, she said that you just have to get used to certain procedures and the thought of carrying your own baby keeps you going. Then she told me her story of how she waited nine years before someone told her of a certain professor whose expertise was on infertility.

She attributes the success of her first IVF to God and when I asked her if she felt that IVF was right before God, she said to me, “My friend, I am Catholic just like you but I believe that God enabled man find a cure for infertility” she explained that there is a limit to what man can do with science, when the sperm is injected to fertilise the eggs, there is no guarantee except God allows it that the sperm will latch on to an egg. She said that you can never remove the God factor in the IVF process because if He does not allow it, it will not be successful.

She is filled with hope that she’d conceive for her second child. At the end of our discussion, I wished her well and she said to me, “Please keep praying to God to bless my heart desires”. I asked her why she was so open about it and she laughed and said that she would never hide this blessing from anyone. She mentioned that her mother always told her to hide the source of her pregnancy until she asked her one question. “Mum, if the person who told me had hidden it from me, would you have had a grandchild now?  This put an end to the paranoia.

I am still praying to God to reveal to me why I must join in the movement against Medically Assisted Reproduction. (MAR) I am too sentimental to condemn the procedure. Now is MAR not better than visiting native/witch doctors and dining with the devil himself all in the search for a fruit of the womb?  Some women are even molested by fake pastors and prophets in the process.

I’ll sure be praying that my new friend Neky, finds peace and i also pray for myself for a more spiritual understanding of this topic. Right now I am in between because I am only against MAR/ART just because the church says so; I haven’t found much reasons to support it. (This makes me long for the days of Abraham when God spoke to men clearly whenever they had issues).

Right now, I pray for more revelations and I know that God will answer my prayers.

  3. It's nothing new for the Catholic Church to be against science due to their fear of losing their conservatism & base. What is more disturbing are the individuals that follow, listen & obey their doctrines. How can one condemn the ultimate gift which God has given man? Observations, theories formed through observations, experiments & finally conclusions. Which is basically what science is !!! Can any of us imagine this world without science? Think of d diseases if not anything else, science was able to cure. Neky please continue Jare and say NO to organized religion

  5. I'm thankful to God that I'm fertile and have a child to attest to that. However I'm with Neky on this, God gave man the ability to do wonders with science. I have friends who without IVF won't be parents. I don't know what MAR is but I'm against it already.
Please let's be thankful that people can be blessed with kids through IVF. Many "barren" women are blessed today because of IVF. Society no longer looks down at them or ostracises them!

IVF always better than native doctors . Seriously though, I think the biblical basis for the Catholic Church's stance against IVF is a bit (emphasis on "bit") misguided. Judah's son who was killed for wasting his sperm instead of impregnating his late brother's son was in my view killed for being wicked to his brother by denying him a chance to continue his lineage posthumously. It wasn't the "sperm waste" that was the clincher, it was the reason for it. My two kobo.

  7. Good Morning Amaka
Instead of IVF; let them explore NaProtech.(Natural Procreative Technology - cheaper and more acceptable to the faith.
It is also science assisted; pro - life and non - invasive with promising results. It is also far cheaper and less painful than IVF.

The issue with IVF is that several fertilized eggs are destroyed - fertilized egg is a human already; destroying them is anti - life (murder)
It is rather a contradiction that one is looking for a baby by destroying lives.

The other question to ask is how is the sperm that was injected obtained.
Obtaining sperm thru masturbation is intrinsically disordered.
Masturbation destroys the very center of gift of self in coitus which expresses the fountain of marital love which ought to be foundation of life.

    What of corollaries of IVF
Once you endorse IVF, you will be endorsing other evil practices which science promotes that goes to erode the institution of family and marriage.
It will then be probable in near future to do away completely with marriages and families and manufacture and clone human beings in the laboratories.
Human life would be valueless and man will lose his dignity and identity of being born and raised in a loving family.

The Church is a wise mother; 2000 years old - she in her profound wisdom has seen the doomsday for us if we continue to thread this path and she is doing her best to shield us.

  8. wonderful!
my dear u don't need to go all d way to Abraham cos even in d now God still speaks. I do understand the menace of fake pastors and prophets, but that notwithstanding God still speaks to his own
    1) GOD is spirit, and they that worship must do that in spirit and in truth
    2) test all spirits to determine if they are of the Lord - how? Any so called prophesy or word of knowledge that is inconsistent with the word of God is of the devil.
    3) study to show thy self approved unto God....so u can rightly divide the word of truth.
    Cheers.

  9. Amaka nwannem, this topic is very sensitive to go into to avoid wrath From ttc families especially ttc women. The sperm belongs to the man, the eggs belongs to the lady. The only difference is that the children are not conceived though coitus. It's just one and the same process so what's the heck. The bible said at the last days knowledge shall increase. Do you understand how many marriages that has been broken due to childlessness which ivf has helped keep together. Why is the African race so mundane that everything technology is viewed as evil? I know of this lady who has been married for years and only had a baby last year at 56 years old; thanx to ivf. These women who go through the humiliation of ivf don't do so for the fun of it. They resort to ivf due to medical reasons in their reproductive system owing to no fault of theirs. Lets embrace this beautiful gift of God. The products of these ivf have there fathers DNA and not goats. These topic makes ttc women who are trying this procedure feel unaccepted

  12. I see today's topic is still smoking till now.

The IVF process itself normally involves fertilizing as many eggs as possible, keep the "best" & "discard" the rest.
Given that the catholic church is against all forms/manner of killing, the "discarded" babies (fetus if you like) are human too, with a right to life & a right to be loved/accepted by their parents.
The church is not against science. Infact, it's about the only church I know that will urge it's members to seek necessary medical attention for illnesses as quickly as possible.

What it's against, is the willful killing of dozens of babies in order to have 1,2,3,etc.
Yes, the ordeal of these families are indeed much, and the church truly sympathizes with its members, but urges science to come up with other methods with less moral issues or killing involved.

Let's not forget that by nature, human beings will always want more.
Today it's IVF. Tomorrow it may be Cloning, legalization of weapons of mass destruction, or one weird idea or another.

Having said that, I do know that "talk is cheap". What one decides to do, is entirely between them & their maker. I dare not judge, as I know not how I would've behaved if I were to be in their shoes.
I make it a duty to pray for God's favour on those seeking to have children. MAY THEY FIND THE PEACE & JOY THEY SEEK THROUGH CHRIST. AMEN

  13. I am 100% with Neky. She deserves to be happy with her life and marriage. It's not easy staying in marriage without a child or children. May God help all women out there looking for the fruit of the womb to find great solutions such as Neky's. MAR, IVF....a child is a child and absolutely from God. Because without God, we can do nothing.

    1. I want us to know something, when God gives you a gift, he doesnt take it back, you decern how to use it.

A lot of girls are fertile and they now have children for married men, is that right? are those children not from God?

You are fertile you are fertile, like the story we read some days back she had 3 children from 3 different men, but her husband still married her, that is what God wants.

You don't have a child now, He wants us to wait. I didn't have issues with child bearing, but there are many more issues facing
God does not want to share his glory with any man

Science now knows drugs that are good and those that are poisonous
http://www.catholicworldreport.com/Item/1774/church_teaching_on_in_vitro_fertilization.aspx if we can go though this itay help.

  14. I'm personally happy that most comments here understand the sensitivity involved in TTC and the IVF process. For what it's worth, I have done Naprotech and you still do the same tests as IVF, it's the procedure post-tests that differ. For example, you track your ovulation by doing a trans-vaginal scan. A doctor (usually male) that you don't know from Adam, inserts a penis-like stuff (wearing condoms to boot!) into your vagina to see if there are mature enough eggs (19mm in size) Hilarious stuff when you are told the eggs are mature enough and you are asked to go home and do the deed! You get home and husband had performance anxiety and his penis can't stand! You perform every permissible Magic and still no show. You have to stop and re-strategize so that next cycle you don't tell hubby "he has to". You just jump him and hope for th best. TTC is something else and if IVF can assist, why not? Everything depends on God cos plenty people have done IVF and still failed.
