Dugtrio

Love is a beautiful thing; it hurts when someone makes it ugly and leaves one party deeply hurt. Eva (not real name) and Joe (not real name) were the best couple on campus; they did everything and went everywhere together. Their paths crossed on a certain day and fate brought them together after some years of being in same school. 

Joe could not quite understand how he had never met the damsel who stood right in front of him on a queue at the school cafeteria waiting to buy beans and fried plantain. He paid for her food before she could get her money from her purse; she thanked him and went on to find a table for herself. 

Of course Joe joined her and they ate their dinner together in silence. It was an uneasy silence for Eva, the stranger who had just paid for her food sat comfortably eating his food without saying a word, so what was the point in sitting together?

After her meal, she was the one who asked how to see him again and throughout the day, she kept thinking about him and why he was so weird.

One week passed and Eva was sure that she needed to see Joe again; after her Friday lectures she walked over to his faculty and met him just walking out of class, they had lunch together and this time it was different. 

That marked the beginning of their romance which blossomed to become one of the most enviable among their peers.

Joe was not the average guy, he was very neat and always looked dapper like he was going to attend an official gathering and not lectures. His hair was always properly shaven and his nails were always so neat that they looked edible.

Joe had a permanent fresh smell you could never catch him unawares, he was always good to go and even in his pyjamas he looked official. 

He was also a perfect gentleman; he pulled out the chair for Eva and didn’t care that people stared at him like he was acting out a movie scene. He never raised his voice at Eva or anyone else and always chose his words carefully.

All Eva’s friends looked forward to Valentine’s Day just to see what romantic stunts Joe would pull. He once had a choir march to the female hostel to sing love songs to Eva presenting her with several gifts from him. 

Joe graduated three years before Eva but the pleasant surprises never stopped coming on Eva’s birthday and Valentine’s Day.  He made Eva the envy of all her friends and she was happily in love with him.

It was no surprise when they got married, it was a match made in heaven and all their friends turned out to wish the couple well on their special day.

Marriage did not change anything, Joe kept true to himself and treated his wife like his queen giving her all the needed support. He still bought her gifts and made her breakfast in bed. Joe was romantic to the core.

After seventeen years in marriage there shouldn't be any more surprises but it wasn't the case here, in a stroke of luck or bad luck as the case may be Eva discovered something about Joe that he carefully hid from her.

Joe gave his wife his phone to receive a call and after she hung up what came up on the screen left her dazed and confused.

A gay porn movie popped up and right there in the video having a "dugtrio" was Joe, her loving husband. A dugtrio is a phrase for a threesome in the black gay community and her Joe was even the "lucky Pierre" another phrase in the gay community for the guy in the middle of the threesome.

It took a whole week before Eva confronted Joe, she had to investigate further and she discovered that her husband had multiple gay partners and was deeply involved in the dangerous world of homosexuality.

Joe was totally unmoved when Eva finally confronted him, the only thing he said to her was that she could leave if she wanted to but not with their children.

Eva also realised from the way Joe's family reacted that they were all aware of Joe's other life. She was kept in the dark for seventeen whole years! The signs were there but there was nothing wrong with a man getting a massage every other week and getting his manicure and pedicure very regularly.

He loved flashy colours but wasn't that in vogue for men? How could she have known that he only wore rainbow coloured socks in solidarity with the gay rights?

It's been several weeks since the discovery and  Eva still can't believe that her darling husband could indulge in such an alien act.

She has filed for a divorce but carefully avoided stating Joe's secret life as one of the grounds for the divorce.  She wants to have custody of all children. 

She would rather be single than stay with a gay husband. Eva prays that none of her sons would tread her estranged husband's path. That is her biggest fear at the moment.

Me: Eva took the best decision in the circumstance. Her fears are not unfounded but contrary to some people's beliefs, personally I do not think that homosexuality is inborn or hereditary and her sons may never turn out to be like their father.
