Isreal

I did something extraordinary and I'm quite proud of myself.

I got a call from a friend and she asked if I could be a volunteer teacher in a public school once or twice a week just for a few minutes.

I didn't need to think twice, I accepted immediately as I asked God to direct my noble cause.

This is easily the most beautiful and interesting thing I have had to do in the year so far.

I got to the school and was introduced to my lookalike, Israel. 😂  The idea is to have a one on one with these pupils and help them read better.

I was so excited but I must confess that when the work started,  I knew that I would never have chosen the primary classroom work as a profession.

Those few minutes felt like hours to me and boy was I glad when Belinda, the coordinator came to tell me that it was time to stop?

Lecturing in the University should be easier where the students are mature enough to learn on their own and the lecturer only needs to deliver his lessons as and when due and as best as he can.

With these precious little ones,  you need to have a lot of patience, energy and love. Love not just for the job but for the children as well. I duff my hat for every teacher especially those who teach in the nursery and primary schools.

Israel and I had a really nice time reading about the Yankari Games Reserve and we learnt some new words. I gave him a gift afterwards for being such a good pupil and the smile on his face was so heart warming.

Now I'm learning my sounds again so I can teach Israel better. I just can't wait to hear him read fluently.

I'm so excited about it and I have every right to feel so, if you want to understand why I feel this way please come and be a volunteer too.  There are many willing children to teach.

By the way,  Israel is a rasta like me. The only difference is that while his was given to him by God from birth,  mine was given to me by God in my adult life.

I can't wait for my next class. Kudos to Flipbook Foundation for Literacy Advancement. God bless your good works.
