The Fourteenth Day

It's no longer news that the Catholic Church is against contraceptive and any other procedure that is against God's natural way of human procreation.

It was an evening of romance for Adesuwa and Tobi (Not real names). It was one of the few unusual nights for this couple who have been married for over a decade. Since their fourth and last child got into the boarding school, the couple fought over every issue even over who should switch on/off the light.

They had hoped that with the last child out of the house there would be time to rekindle their relationship which had been battered over the years by child bearing, raising six children, loss of job, infidelity and struggling to make ends meet.

They had two sets of twins which was a blessing yet presented a big financial burden to bear. They argued over decisions concerning their children and at a certain period it was so bad that they considered a separation but decided against it for the sake of the children.

Adesuwa's last pregnancy came as a surprise to the couple. They are Catholics and so they kept to the traditions and beliefs of true Catholics. Contraceptive is a no-no, another sacrilege in the Catholic Church is abortion. Just like the name, abortion is an abomination.

After their first child and two sets of twins and a six year gap, the couple welcomed another baby to the funny delight of friends and family.

The unexpected birth of their baby caused Adesuwa and Tobi to begin to ride with real caution. At first they used and IUD but after five years of battling her conscience, Adesuwa succumbed to her Catholic faith, went for confessions and removed her contraceptive. The couple have been successful so far with recommended narural way of preventing pregnancy. It's been five whole years and still no accidental discharges.

Adesuwa says that the economy is a natural deterrent for them. Tobi made a wrong career move, things just went tumbling down and their marriage became even more troubled. With all children out of the house, their arguments last even much longer and are even louder.

They also stay for even a longer time without speaking to each other.

Things had been sour too long between the couple that an anticipated night of romance was indeed a rare one: what used to be a normal routine in the earlier days of their marriage had become extinct.

Experiencing a night of laughter with each other was what the couple had not seen in a long time.

Some friends of theirs invited them out to celebrate their wedding anniversary and insisted that Adesuwa who no longer went anywhere with Tobi must be there.

That invitation made Tobi realise that he was tired of fighting. In his usual manner he would rather boycot the event than ask Adesuwa to come.

He was always sure of her response which would make him beg her. He hated to have to beg Adesuwa to go out with him.

This time he felt differently, he wanted to beg her, he had missed begging her; Adesuwa was pleasantly surprised by her husband's sudden change in character. She decided to enjoy the moment for she was sure it would not last.

Tobi helped her choose what to wear and it was a Calvin Klein little black dress (LBD) with buttons in front. Even when he winked at her and called it his quick access dress she still was so sure that the night would go south like many other nights that started well.

It was a karaoke bar and Adesuwa stole the show: she had such a lovely evening and even had a few glasses of red wine. They talked and laughed all the way home.

As soon as they got home....
