Greenlife supports young writers

Organizers of Rising Star Writing Competition have rewarded winners of the third edition of their nationwide writing competition for children with fantastic prizes, comprising laptops, television sets, tablet computers and printers. The award ceremony was held on Wednesday, October 24, 2018 at Annes Luxury Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos. The annual competition is organized by The Writers Corner in collaboration with Vuvuzela Communications Limited and sponsored by Greenlife Pharmaceuticals Limited.

In her welcome address, the Coordinator, Rising Star Writing Competition, Mrs. Uche Udoji, said the ceremony was not just to award deserving winners, but to inspire every child desirous of being a writer to pick up and develop their writing skills. “The future belongs to these young ones and writing is among the keys to the future. Writing paints the voice, thereby allowing children to express themselves confidently, hence the need to inspire children to write need to be over-emphasized,” Udoji said. She noted that 307 entries were received nationwide and 25 pupils stood out in the competition which covered poetry and story writing. Mrs. Udoji urged parents, teachers, guardians, and schools to place emphasis on literacy, especially creative writing, so as to ignite a love for writing in the children from a young age.

The chairperson of the occasion, Mrs. Ifeoma Nwosu, wife of the Managing Director of Greenlife Pharmaceuticals, Chief Ebere Nwosu, said that sponsoring the writing competition is one of the ways the pharmaceutical company is giving back to the society. She said, “This is a noble cause to encourage the young children. We no longer have a good education system, but with the much we can do, we would continue to ensure that we get it right again.”

Also, the Head of Human Resources and Public Relations of Greenlife pharmaceutical, Mrs. Amaka Nwosisi, challenged other corporate bodies to shift their focus from frivilous entertainment and invest in the education of the young ones. “We have to get to the point of making the prizes of reading and writing competition attractive to the young children so that they would be more encouraged. The culture of reading and writing is dying because of the value the society placed on it. This competition was birthed to revive the reading and writing habit in our society, to catch the attention of these children before they grow to be adults” Nwosisi said.

Nine-year-old Jailyn Nsofor from Corona Schools, Lagos emerged as the first position in poetry while eight-year-old Demilade Olaere from Livingspring School Lagos came top in the short story category for the primary school pupils. In the secondary category Snow George from Starville School, Abuja, came tops in poetry, while Ofomata Chinyere from Louisville Girls College, Ijebu Itele, Ogun State took the top prize in short story. In the Secondary Category, Snow George of Starville Schools Abuja and Ofomata Chinyere Stephanie of Louisville Girls College, Ijebu-Itele, Ogun State, won the First Prizes in Poetry and Short Story respectively. In the primary category, nine-year old Jailyn Nsofor of Corona Schools, Lagos won the First Prize (Poetry) while Demilade Olaere of Livingspring Schools, Lagos won the First Prize (Sort Story).

Second Place winners in the Primary category are: Udo-OkaforChimchetram of Nickdel School, Lagos (short story) and Onyeke, Zoe of St. Saviours School, Ikoyi, Lagos (poetry). Second place prize in the secondary category (short story) went to Adebayo, Emmanuel of Starville Schools, Abuja while the counterpart prize in poetry went to Ayogu, Chiamaka Stephanie of Louisville Girls College, Ijebu-Itelle, Ogun State. The third prize winners in Primary Category are Chiwetalu Chibuikem (short story) of Ivy League School, Lagos and Dada Segun of Imperial Gate School, Lekki, Lagos (poetry). Third prizes in the Secondary Category went to Ajani Bukola Mohammad of School Masters Academy, Ajah Lagos (short story) and Nwagwu Chijindu Oluchi of Loiusville Girls College, Ijebu Itelle, Ogun State (poetry).
